What to Expect at Your First Visit to a Tampa Pain Management Clinic

By Dr. Myrdalis Díaz-Ramírez, MD · Double-Board Certified · 25+ Years of Experience · DR2SPINE, Tampa, FL

If you’re reading this, you’re probably tired. Tired of the pain, tired of the waiting rooms, and maybe tired of being told “it’s just age” or “let’s look at the MRI and see.”

I want to start there, because the pain you feel is real. It changes how you sleep, how you work, how you play with your grandkids. So before we talk about what happens at a first visit, let me say this plainly: you’re not a number here. Your back is not a standard problem.

This guide walks you through what a first visit to a pain management clinic in Tampa can look like at DR2SPINE, so you walk in knowing what to expect. No surprises.

Who You’ll Meet

You’ll meet me, Dr. Myrdalis Díaz-Ramírez. I’m a double-board certified physician with more than 25 years of experience. My background includes minimally invasive spine surgery and a full spectrum of regenerative and pain management therapies. That mix matters. It means I understand the surgical side, and I also know the many non-surgical options that come before it. I like to say we’re a bridge between conventional and alternative medicine. You can read more about me and the practice on our about page.

And one more thing. The physician you meet on day one is the physician who follows your plan of care. We don’t leave you alone.

First, You Tell Your Story

We don’t start with a form or a scan. We start with you.

I’ll ask you to simply talk about why you decided to make this appointment. When did it start? What does it feel like? What can’t you do now that you used to do? Take your time. Your words set the agenda, not the other way around.

This is the part many patients tell us they never got before. Rushed visits, no real exam, a quick look at the images, and out the door. We don’t work that way.

The Exam: We Look at the Whole Picture

Next comes a real, hands-on exam. Here’s why it matters. Pain rarely comes from one isolated spot. Your spine is a functional unit, so a problem in one place can show up as pain somewhere else. That’s why we examine broadly, and why we think of your spine as a system.

I’ll also explain what I’m feeling and seeing in plain words. If a joint grates when you move, I’ll tell you it grates, and then I’ll give you the medical word too. That way you have both.

If we need more information, we order it. X-rays, labs, other tests. Then I see you with those results. That’s how it works.

How We Think: The DR2SPINE Motion Method

Everything we do follows five steps, in this order. Prime. Map. Target. Repair. Restore. Your first visit is where the first two begin.

Prime. Before any treatment, we look at what can help or hold back your healing: sleep, weight, lifestyle, overall health. We want you to get the full benefit of whatever we do. You can get a head start with our 5-step healing prep checklist.

Map. This is the listening and the exam. We find the true source of your pain, not just the loudest spot on the MRI. Whether it’s low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, the map comes first.

Target. If a procedure makes sense, we do it with imaging guidance, ultrasound or fluoroscopy. We won’t inject you without looking at what we’re doing. Precision matters.

Repair. We focus on regenerative medicine rather than steroids. Steroids can calm pain and inflammation quickly, but over time they can be hard on tissue. That’s a clinical conviction for me, not a sales point.

Restore. Follow-up, with the same physician. Always.

Non-Surgical Pain Relief: What Options Might Come Up

Not every patient needs a procedure at the first visit. Sometimes the plan starts with the exam results, some prep, and a clear next step. But if regenerative care fits your case, here are the therapies we may talk about:

I want to make sure we treat the most areas that make sense in your case. Not more, not less. Results vary from person to person, and nobody can promise you a specific outcome. What I can offer is a plan built around you, and a physician who stays with you. If you’re wondering about timing, this article on how long it takes to see results from PRP can help set expectations.

What We Don’t Do

Let me be direct about this so you know before you come in. We’re a non-opioid, non-surgical spine practice. I don’t prescribe or manage opioids. If that’s what you’re looking for, we’re not the right fit, and I’d rather tell you that now.

If you’re looking for a different path, one that looks for the cause instead of only quieting the symptom, then keep reading.

A Word About Cost and Insurance

DR2SPINE is a direct-pay concierge practice. That’s the model, and it’s what allows the time and attention we give each patient. Many patients ask about coverage for regenerative care, so we wrote a plain explanation: is regenerative medicine covered by insurance?

How to Get Ready for Your Visit

A few simple things help you get the most from your time:

  • Write down when your pain started and what makes it better or worse.
  • Bring any past imaging, reports, or records you have.
  • Make a short list of what you want to be able to do again.
  • Write down your questions. Every one of them is a good question.
  • Remember that it’s okay to ask, compare, and take your time. If you’d like another set of eyes on a diagnosis, learn about our second opinions.

You’re an Active Partner in This

Here’s my excitement. When a patient comes in already in pain, and ready to gain, that’s where the work really starts. You’re not a passive patient waiting for a fix. You’re my partner. We map, we target, and we build a plan together.

Low back pain, in particular, needs a thoughtful, individual approach rather than a one-size-fits-all plan. That’s the reason we start with your story and your exam, not a template.
